Hit and Miss

Form follows function is a principle associated with 20th-century modernist architecture and industrial design which says that the shape of a building or object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose. The better we understand how people think, feel and behave, the better product we can design to make it intuitive to people.

Hit: So why when we design a shampoo bottle or similar, do we place the opening at the top of the bottle, when all the shampoo naturally gravitates towards the bottom of the bottle? And when it is nearly finished, we have to find a spot in the bathroom where we can balance the bottle upside down, so the shampoo gravitates closer to the opening.
Introducing Kevin.Murphy Angel.Wash and Angel.Rinse, the shampoo and conditioner with a spout at the bottom of the bottle! Hallelujah! He understood how people behave and he designed the bottle accordingly!

Miss: Flour packaging. When you open the packet, and try to dispense into a container, it snows in the kitchen! And if you leave the flour in the packet, it doesn’t stay ‘too fresh to flop’!
